This period started after the major mass extinction which happened in the Permian and the life and biodiversity had began to stabilize in Triassic. The mass extinction witnessed the killing of 96 percent of the marine genera, 70 percent of terrestrial genera and 99.5 percent of individual organism. However, the reason for this extinction is not very clear, but unofficially it is also known as the Great Dying.
The whole of the world in this period was considered to be a single super-continent called Pangaea. The dry and parched climatic conditions prevailed was another challenge for the biodiversity to began a fresh life.
The corals were the first one to make its presence in oceans after a long gap of hundred and fifty million years ago. Then after, ammonites prospered from one line that somehow managed to escape from the Great Dying. Fish such as ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and many other types of fish made their impact. During the concluding stage of Triassic period, ichthyosaurus increased its size, similar to dinosaurs.
The reptiles were the first one on land and it is because of this reason the Mesozoic is known as the Age of Reptiles. Ancestors of modern insects, namely dragonflies, topped the insect list to exist. Archosauromorphs, a cold blooded dinosaur, were also found.
Due to the dry climate, many trees could not grow and hence, evergreens like conifers and some gymnosperms flourished in this period.
