Major Events In The Triassic Period
The Triassic period witnessed the remarkable changes in the biodiversity. The first flower, angiosperm, flourished in this period. The first flying vertebrate, pterosaurs, also came into existence during this period. It was one of the important periods which witnessed the advent of dinosaurs, which later flourished in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. |

The first of three periods Mesozoic Era were followed by the Jurassic period. Due to the volcanic eruption, the Triassic period did not have a long history. This period classified the organisms in three categories. First one is Permian-Triassic (P-T) extinction, second one is the group that boomed in the period; and third one is that group that began to flourish but got recognized in the Mesozoic period.
In the aquatic population, corals came into existence during the early Triassic. Many marine reptiles such as Sauropterygia that attributed pachypleurosaurs and nothosaurs, both of them were widespread during the middle Triassic, especially in the Tethys Ocean region, placodonts, and the first plesiosaurs, a member of a diverse and primarily marine order of reptiles. Others included were lizard-like Thalattosauria, Askeptosaurs, and the highly successful ichthyosaurs, which appeared in Early Triassic seas and rapidly broadened its horizons and developed to huge size.
Among land plants, lycophytes, cycads, ginkgophyta and glossopterids, some varieties of seed plants, conifers dominated in this period.
In the P-T extinction, Temnospondyl amphibians, some lineages such as Trematosaurus boomed in initial stages of Triassic. Lissamphibia, an amphibian in the early Triassic, existed in this period, but later thrived in Jurassic period when Temnospondyl was found rarely.
In the early and late Triassic, the first mammal came into existence. Also, Ornithodira evolved into pterosaurs, and dinosaurs came into existence. In reptiles, Proganochelys and Proterochersis came into light.
Triassic period ended with extinction in marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs; invertebrates such as brachipoda, gastropods and mollusks and nearly 22 per cent of the marine population, and partially marine genera disappeared.
