Plants Of The Jurassic Time Period
The Jurassic time period was the age of reptiles when many middle sized dinosaurs significantly changed their shape and size and became enormous in size and horrible in looks. Herbivore dinosaurs Sauropods such as Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus and Apatosaurus existed during this period. To gain energy and remain healthy they used to eat different plants and trees. |
The most abundant plant during this time period was the conifer which was not very big in size. Therefore, the struggle to get sufficient food was a problem for herbivore dinosaurs. Many times Sauropods devastated nearly an entire forest for food, compelling other herbivore dinosaurs to move to another area in search of a new food source.
Araucarioxylon was the leading conifer of this period. Other plants were Ginkgophytes such as ginkgos, club mosses, horsetails, ferns, seed ferns; Sphenopsids such as neocalamites; Filincophyta such as matonidium; Cycadeodia such as otozamites; Ptilophyllum; Cycadeoidea, and Cycadophytes.
Among the above mentioned plants, horsetails were the main supply of nutrition for the herbivore dinosaurs. It was flexible and fast growing plant as its underground stem grew very fast. The flourishing of such plants also brought some favorable changes on earth.
The sea level plants such as seed ferns, ferns, horsetails, club mosses and low level conifers were the main source of food for the dinosaurs of small and medium size named as Xiaosaurus, Dryosaurus, Kentrosaurus and Stegosaurus.
Few other plants of this period were williamsonia, a cycadeoidphyte; williamsoniella, a cycadeoid; and caytonia, a caytoniale. Palm trees had not developed in this period.
