Jurassic Period Animals

The Jurassic period's name originated from the mountains of Jura, which are located between Switzerland and France. Another reason is also that the first rock of the Jurassic period was found there. Jurassic period falls in the second stage of the Mesozoic era. It lasted for approximately 65 million years; it commenced 205 million years ago and continued until 135 million years ago.

During the Triassic period dinosaurs were small and middle shaped, but in the Jurassic period dinosaurs had attained the largest ever shape and size and topped food chain. Herbivore dinosaurs of this period were Sauropods. The profuse flora and vegetation during this period nourishes these plant eating dinosaurs very well. Other herbivore dinosaurs were Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus and Apatosaurus.

Similar to herbivorous dinosaurs in the Triassic period, carnivore dinosaurs also increased in size. The exceptionally horrible and violent looking dinosaurs were Allosaurus and the Ceratosaurus. The movie Jurassic Park, which was big hit, showed that Tyrannosaurus Rex existed in this period, while the fact is that Tyrannosaurus Rex came in late Cretaceous period.

Pterosaurs were considered to be the most violent flying reptiles during this period, but first time any flying reptiles were seen in the form of Archaeopteryx. Many feathered reptiles have been found in the today’s world that these are not that enormous and violent, but the fact is that many feathered reptiles came in this period. Marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, large marine crocodiles, variation of modern-day sharks and cephalopods were also discovered during the period.

During the Jurassic period, many new organisms began evolving along with invertebrates like rudists and belemnites.
