Facts About The Jurassic Time Period
The Jurassic period, better known as Age of Dinosaurs, occurred 205 to 145 million years ago. The name Jurassic is derived from the Jura Mountains, which lie between France and Switzerland. This was the place where the first fossil of this period was found. This period is the middle of three periods of Mesozoic Era. |
The beginning of the period saw the united landscapes, which till the end developed into many oceans and seas. Many floral and faunal species also came into existence during this period. The Jurassic Sauropods are considered to be largest four legged land animals with necks long enough to reach the top of the trees. They preferred to walk through great flooded plains. In a study, it got proved that Sauropods liked to walk in groups at an unhurried pace and needed to eat constantly to gain energy. Apatosaurus, also called as Brontosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Seismosaurus also existed during this time.
Stegasaurs, another species of dinosaurs well-known for the plates on the back that contains the blood vessels and spikes tail, which in turn, helped them to maintain the body temperature, lived during this period.
Compsognathus, a carnivore dinosaur, found during the late Jurassic period, had sharp edged teeth. The lizard-like hips and hind legs helped this dinosaur to balance its body while hunting for prey.
Archaeopteryx, a dinosaur having feathers, tail and three fingers in each hand, and stretched, also was lived during this era. The remains of Archaeopteryx indicate that it was capable of flying. Another meat eating dinosaur Allosaurus had very enormous jaws, strong forelimbs with vast claws and legs, flourished during the Jurassic time period.
In flora, there were no palms and only ferns, conifers, ginkgoes and true cycads thrived.
