Although paleontology was present as far as 5th century BC, it was only in the 18th century that it truly became a science. This happened after Georges Cuvier published his work on comparative anatomy. Paleontology gained momentum in the 19th century when fossils were found and provided vital information on evolution and organisms of the past.

Then in the 20th century, many fossils were found in China that led to new information being known about the early stages of evolution involving animals, fish, dinosaurs, birds and mammals.

Today Paleontology is an advanced science that tends to be wedged between geology, archeology and biology. However, the techniques used in paleontology are taken from many other sciences, including mathematics, biochemistry and engineering. Gone are the days when paleontologists were just seen as archeologists. Today these scientists are specialized in various sub-divisions of paleontology. Some focus on fossils, while others on ecology of the ancient times. All modern-day paleontologists are aided by advanced technology that allows them to study and understand more about the ancient environment and ancient organisms.

Truly the science of paleontology has come a long way from when science actually began. Today paleontology is able to tell us more about history of evolution than just a decade ago.
