Who Came Up With Natural Selection ?
The way controversy was created after Charles Darwin published his famous book The Origin of Species in 1859, one would think he was instrumental in coming up with natural selection. However, there was early evidence that natural selection was known by biologists only there was term coined. |

So, who came up with natural selection? The answer is no one and yet Charles Darwin. Scientists and biologists had known for years with the evidence available that life on Earth had undergone changes over a period of time and many species had become extinct. They also had unearthed many evidences used by Darwin himself to put forth his idea of natural selection. However, before Darwin came onto the scene, the changes did not have a name or terminology. It was just an accepted norm.
It was the concept of natural selection put forth by Darwin that took all the available evidence and collated it into a bigger and better picture -- inheritable adaptations as response to changes in the environment. This can be explained in a simpler way. If an organism has traits that allow it to survive in an environment that is harsh, the chances of that organism reproducing more off springs increases and thus the traits passing on to successive generations also increase. This makes the genes of the organism more dominant compared to one that is not able to have too many off springs to pass on its genes. Hence, in the long term, the more dominant of the two organisms will flourish. And this is the premise of natural selection that Darwin put forth.
