What Is Natural Selection Used By Evolutionary Psychologists ?

What is natural selection used by evolutionary psychologists? Basically evolutionary psychology is a science related to normal psychology wherein mental and psychological characteristics are taken as adaptations. Evolutionary psychologists believe that these adaptations are a result of natural selection.

It is quite common in evolutionary biology to take the physiological functions of the body and explain it as adaptations. The same principle or surmise is used by evolutionary psychologists.

Evolutionary psychologists view entire human psychology as adaptations that occurred because there were constant problem in the ancestral environment and the adaptations help to overcome those problems. These adaptations can only occur through natural selection. One common example of natural selection adaptation given by evolutionary psychologists is the inherited ability that humans have to acquire a language while they do not have the inherited ability to read and write. Other examples of natural selection adaptations are ability to recognize family from non-family members, ability to understand other people's emotions, and ability to identify healthier mates.

The theory of natural selection is used by evolutionary psychologists to also explain the conflicts that species have among themselves. For instance, if you take mammals, the mother and the offspring may struggle with the weaning process because there are more benefits from it for the mother than the baby. While in humans, this also exists but there is an additional trait of cooperation.

So, what is natural selection used by evolutionary psychologists good for? It is a science that tries to explain human behavior and emotions as adaptations rather than assuming that the mental abilities that humans have are just plain and simple learning mechanisms.
