Charles Darwin used the concept of natural selection to explain how evolution worked. He used examples to explain how an organism's environment works towards bringing about changes and only those organisms that can adapt to the changes in the environment survive and procreate.
When Charles Darwin was young, he travelled aboard the HMS Beagle as it sailed around the world. It was his job to observe and make notes of plants and animals where ever the ship dropped anchor. It was during this research trip that Darwin observed many new plants and animals. He was particularly impressed by the animals on Galapagos Island archipelago where he found that each island in the group had a different kind of tortoise, finch and marine iguana.
Upon his return to England in 1837, Darwin transcribed the details of his trip into a book entitled The Voyage of the Beagle. However, he made no effort whatsoever to explain any of the observations he had made. Thereafter, Darwin started working on the concept of natural selection but it was only 1858 that he published his thoughts on the subject.
Darwin published his thoughts on natural selection only after he received a letter from a fellow researcher named Alfred Russel Wallace, who had similar ideas on the subject. Darwin combined Wallace's ideas and his own and presented a paper to the Linnae Society in July 1858 and the following year he published his extremely popular entitled The Origin of Species.
It took several years before Charles Darwin's concept of natural selection was accepted by other biologists world over.
