What Did Tyrannosaurus Rex Eat ?
Tyrannosaurus Rex which lived towards the fag end of the age of the dinosaurs was the most formidable carnivore of its time. It had a gigantic head of upto 5 feet in length, huge in relation to its body. To remain stable, the T. Rex had a long pointed tail which acted as a counterbalance and also aided it in swift, tight turns. |

The animal had well developed olfactory lobes and nerves indicating it scented its prey from great distances. Its binocular vision with forward viewing eyes also contributed in spotting and stalking its prey.
Whether the T. Rex was a predator or scavenger is in some debate but there is no doubt it was meat eating. Its head and powerful jaws were oriented towards tearing off large chunks of flesh. The upper jaw was U shaped to accommodate more matter in a bite. Its S shaped neck was sturdy and it is believed that with a single bite and a twist of its powerful neck T. Rex was be able to tear off 500 pounds of flesh in one go. Its jaws were powerful enough to crush bones. The skull bones were massive but ‘pneumatized’ meaning they were of honeycomb construction to make them more flexible and light without compromising in strength.
The teeth in the front of the jaw were closely packed with tips like chisel blades and a rear surface with reinforced edges. They were designed to reduce the risk of breaking under the strain of tearing and pulling. Nonetheless, like all theropods, the T. Rex’s teeth were replaceable. A single tooth found at an excavation measures 12 inches including the root. This gives some measure of the awesome power of the animal.
