They had 17 bony plates embedded on the back. These plates ran along the Stegosaurus spine and tail in two broad rows. The plates were alternatively aligned and the largest plate would be as much as 2.5 ft tall. They also had spikes at the end of their tails called thagomizers. These spikes were a weapon of defense while the plates acted like radiators that helped the stegosaurus dissipate body heat. An amazing feature of the stegosaurus was they had a very small head with a brain, the size of a walnut and a toothless beak.More...
Stegosaurus Behavior
The Stegosaurus or roof lizard was a prehistoric armed dinosaur that dated back to the Jurassic period. Stegosaurii roamed the earth between 150 and 145 million years ago in what is now western North America and possibly Europe as well. The striking feature of the stegosaurus was its arched back and 17 unusual upright plates that ran the length of the spine to the tail. The plates were in a double row formation and the two pairs of spikes extended longitudinally from the end of the tail.More...
Stegosaurus Habitat
The stegosaurus or roof lizard was an herbivorous quadruped of the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago. The animal is believed to have been native to North America but there is evidence of stegosaurii having existed in Europe, and some evidence by way of fossil finds in Madagascar.
The stegosaurus had an arched back and distinctive plates that stood upright in double rows extending the length of its arched back down to the tail. The tail terminated in twin pairs of spikes. The forelegs were short because of which the head was held comparatively low suggesting it found its food at a lower level.More...
What Environment Did The Stegosaurus Live In ?
The stegosaurus was long thought to be native exclusively to North America. But in 2006 a fossilized partial skeleton was found in Portugal while excavating for a motorway. The remains included part of the spinal column, bones, including the thigh bone, dorsal plates and a tooth. Excavation was still underway but what was found was adequate to confirm that the skeleton was in fact that of a stegosaurus.More...
When Did The Stegosaurus Live ?
The Stegosaurus was a large, heavily built, herbivorous quadruplet that lived about 150 million years ago in the Jurassic era. These dinosaurs walked on all four legs as their front limbs were shorter than their hind limbs, which gave them an arched appearance. The striking feature about the Stegosaurus was the rows of large bony plates that ran along the spine and spikes at the tail. The spikes were their in-built weapons of defense and the plates served to dissipate heat from the body.More...
