When Did The Stegosaurus Live ?
The Stegosaurus was a large, heavily built, herbivorous quadruplet that lived about 150 million years ago in the Jurassic era. These dinosaurs walked on all four legs as their front limbs were shorter than their hind limbs, which gave them an arched appearance. |

The striking feature about the Stegosaurus was the rows of large bony plates that ran along the spine and spikes at the tail. The spikes were their in-built weapons of defense and the plates served to dissipate heat from the body.
Stegosaurii lived and moved in herds of mixed ages. Early footprints revealed herds which included a number of babies. Evidence shows that the stegosaurus inhabited the floodplains of ancient western North America as they might have been attracted to graze near water where food was more plentiful.
They stegosaurus laid eggs of 4 to 6 per clutch. It was presumed that from the time of hatching, the new-born babies had to be self sufficient. However, studies show that dinosaurs took care of their young like mammals, watching over them and bringing them food.
Since the only evidence of the existence of stegosaurii is fossils, it has been very difficult to identify and study their behavioral patterns. Studies indicate that these species had incredibly disproportionate small brains – the size of a walnut, when compared to the gigantic body. A large canal was noticed in the hip region of the spinal chord which gave rise to an idea that a stegosaurus had a second brain in the tail to control the reflexes of the rear portion of the animal.
