How Did Brontosaurus Live ?
The Brontasaurus came into existence during the Jurassic period nearly 150 million years ago and became extinct during the Cretaceous period before 60 million years. Initially, the fossil remains were found in the year 1877. It was the juvenile remains of the species. When another set of adult remains were found two years later, scientists believed that these belonged to a different species of dinosaurs! Hence it has got two names - "Apatosaurus" and “Brontosaurus”. |

The estimated length of this species is about 70 feet on an average! This is close to the size of a tennis court! An adult Brontosaurus might have weighed about 33 tons! The name “Brontosaurus” literally means “thunder lizard”. It came from the fact that the massive size of the dinosaur resulted in the vibrations of the earth when it walked.
Most of the fossil remains have been found in the western parts of the US. Initially, paleontologists thought that these animals lived partly in water and partly in land. However, this belief has changed because they infer that the animals may have not been able to survive while lying submerged in the water as they might have found it difficult to breathe.
The herbivorous Brontosaurus moved in herds and grazed the leaves, ferns and plants for food. The long neck of the animal helped to reach the leaves of tall trees for food. The tail looked like a whip and they walked on four legs. The hind limbs were smaller than the forelimbs. There was strong claw on each of the forelimb. However, only the first three toes had claws in the hind limbs.
