Brontosaurus Habitat
Brontosaurus is also popularly known as the “thunder lizard”. This is because scientists believed that the animal was quite huge and must have been as long as a tennis court that the ground underneath must have vibrated when it walked. This is an herbivorous dinosaur which fed on plants, ferns and leaves of trees. |

This species is believed to have been one of the largest dinosaurs of its era and was initially named as Apatosaurus when some of the first fossil remains were discovered. It had very long necks in order to reach the tall tree leaves and longer tails which helped in balancing its huge body. The dinosaurs belong to the Diplodocidae family.
Brontosaurus lived in mild climatic conditions. Sunshine and warm rains were important as these were essential for the flourishing plant life which they were dependant on for food.
Paleontologists initially believed that these animals lived near water bodies or swamps. However, when the size of the dinosaurs was estimated they believed that highly wet conditions would have trapped their massive bodies in the muddy areas that surrounded the edge of the water bodies. In addition, the weight of the water on the body of the animal when it submerged would have prevented them from breathing comfortably.
The fossils of these species date back to the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods. They have been found in the western parts of the US. Scientists believe that the species would have come into existence nearly 150 million years ago and died during the later years of the Cretaceous period, around 60 million years ago.
