This dinosaur species had a long neck in order to reach the leaves of tall trees and walked on four legs. The tail looked like a whip. The hind limbs of this animal were comparatively shorter than the forelimbs. Research reveals that this species averages about 85 meters in length and weighed about 30 tons. This is around the total weight of 4 huge elephants!
Like many other sauropods, the Brontosaurus species had one large claw in each forelimb and in the first three toes of its hind limbs. Compared to its massive size, the skull and brain of this species were small.
The teeth of the Brontosaurus looked like chisels. This was suitable for its herbivorous food habits. The diet of this species consisted mainly of ferns, plants and the leaves of different trees.
Some experts believe that these animals partly lived in the water. The cervical vertebrae of this species were heavy and looked elongated. The stocky leg bones made the researchers infer that the animal was huge in size and this helped in scaring off its predators. Studies reveal that the dinosaur swallowed the leaves as a whole than chew it. The stomach stones helped in digesting the food.
