The Allosarus species were noted for their huge skull as well as a long and heavy tail. They were bipedal in nature, which means they walked with two legs. The forelimbs looked reduced but the hind limbs were stronger and larger. The forelimbs consisted of just three fingers. The Allosaurus species fed on other types of dinosaurs that were in existence during this era.
One of the most notable species of Allosaurus named Allosaurus fragilis weighed almost 2 metric tons and was 9m long. The teeth of Allosaurus were modest in size compared to the massive physical features. The front teeth were larger while the ones near the skull were smaller and narrower. The edges of the teeth appeared like a saw. The teeth of the Allosaurus were fragile and hence, were replaced often during the lifetime.
The broad rib cage of this species resulted in a barrel shaped chest. Other prominent features were the huge hip and pubic bones. Notably, the females lacked pubic bones in order to make the egg-laying process easier. The large and pointed claws were strongly curved.
Fossil remains of this species were mainly found in the North American plains. In addition, the species were also known to exist in various parts of Africa as well as Australia.
