Paleontologists found a large number of fossils were found in the plains of North America. Utah may have housed a lot of Allosaurus as a majority of remains were concentrated in this place. In addition, fossils have also been found in Australia and Africa which makes the scientists infer that this carnivore species would have been quite common during its existence. A large skeleton of this species was discovered in Wyoming. Other places where the remains of this species have been found are parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Tanzania, South Dakota, Montana and Colorado.
Many remains of Allosaurus were found in parts of western USA. This was popularly known as Morrison formation. Researchers believed that this part of the world was dry for a particular period of time in the year. Conifer trees, ferns and other wild bushes could have been scattered in different parts of the land. However, there is no evidence of wild grasses or flowering trees during this period. When the first fossil remains of this species were found, experts described it as "petrified horse hoof". Further study revealed that this was nothing but the tail bone of Allosaurus!
