This bipedal species had a huge skull as well as a heavy and long tail. The hind limbs were strong and large but the forelimbs were smaller with just three fingers. The most popular species of this kind was Allosaurus fragilis with a typical length of nearly 9 meters and weighing more than 2 metric tons!
Compared to the physical features, the teeth of the species were modest in size. While the premaxilla held about five teeth, maxilla had anywhere between 14 and 17 teeth. The teeth that grew near the skull became narrower as compared to the front. The edges of the teeth looked like a saw and were very sharp. The teeth were fragile and hence were shed and replaced from time to time.
Allosaurus had a broad rib cage giving a barrel shape to the chest. The hip was massive. The pubic bone was quite prominent. Research suggests that this would have been used to rest the body on the ground.
The females did not have pube bones. This could have made the egg-laying process much easier. They had 3 fingers in each hand. The claws were large, strongly curved and pointed in the tips. The innermost finger was the largest out of all the 3 fingers.
