Giganotosaurus lived around 95 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period and was larger in size than a Tyrannosaurus but smaller than a Spinosaurus. So, how big was the dinosaur Giganotosaurus? It was around 45 feet long and weighed nearly 8 tons more than a Tyrannosaurus. According to scientists who have been fervently studying Giganotosaurus, it was not as powerful as a T-Rex but was the largest carnivorous dinosaur. In addition, the Giganotosaurus had a larger skull than a T-Rex but a smaller brain, narrow teeth and less strong jaws.
The Giganotosaurus fossil was discovered in Northern Patagonia in 1993 by an amateur fossil hunter named Ruben Carolini. This was fossil was a near-complete skeleton and on discovering his find, Carolini immediately called two professional paleontologists, Professors Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado. Prior to this find, it was always believed that the T-Rex was the largest predator living in land.

It is believed by many that there may fossils of other larger predators still hidden in the ground and all one needs to do is find them. Until then, Giganotosaurus is the largest carnivore of its time and the original fossil is proudly displayed in Carmen Funes Museum in Neuquen, Argentina but you can find many replicas in most museums.
